“I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

This is definitely not Montana. Seems like an obvious statement, but it goes a bit farther than the geography and the humidity. The Philippines is an absolutely beautiful place. I could stare for hours at the canopy of all the different trees, flowers, bugs, birds, and butterflies. But what I am even more mesmerized with is the people. I am so very different from them. Approximately every 5 minutes I’m told that I’m really big or I have strange eyes. The kids love to laugh at us, finding the simplest action hilarious. Not only do we look and talk different but our cultures and ways of life are different too.

Today we hopped into the middle of the kids’ week of VBS. When we walked into the building where the main activities were being held, the children were singing some songs and doing motions. Not really knowing what we needed to do my team members and I subtly (though not as much as we would have liked to) tried to join in. Eventually we were right along side the kids doing the motions like pros, praising Jesus with all these beautiful children.

Singing and praising God.

Looking back on that I’m reminded of something that I think will lead me through the rest of this trip. Despite all of our differences in appearance, our language, and the way we act there is one thing that we all have in common and that is our Savior Jesus Christ and our love for him. This one thing is what connects all of us. It’s what we’re building our relationships on. And that is exciting. It’s changing may view of God  and putting faces to the phrase “Jesus loves everybody”.

I’m not in “Kansas” anymore. I’m in an entirely different world. But God is here and His love is greater than the differences between us. I’m so excited to get to know these people better and to watch God’s plan for us unfold. Thank you for all of your prayers and support.

Walking with Him,

Katie Fischer
