Library is Finished!
CREATION OF CALUNASAN SUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY
LOBOC, BOHOL, PHILIPPINES
Approximately 3000 books were donated by community and school libraries as well as individuals in and around Glasgow, Big Timber, and Anaconda Montana.
Books were driven to Big Timber where they were stored in a warehouse until they were trucked to Seattle. The books were added to other material and shipped in a 40 foot container to Cebu City in the Philippines. The container cleared customs in Cebu and reloaded onto a slow boat to Bohol. They were trucked up to the barrio where they were stored in Silangan Balay until a team came from Montana and Oregon to process the materials.
The books were sorted into fiction, nonfiction, and several subgroups. The books were numbered and labeled within each main group.
FP =Fiction Primary
FI=Fiction Intermediate
NF=Nonfiction with subgroups
CS=Class Sets
SD=Special Days
R=Reference
After the books were categorized, they were placed on the shelves in the new library. The total number of books was 2102, which is a great start for the school’s new library. The staff is very proud that they are the only elementary school in the area to have a library.
Teachers were given student texts in reading, math, language arts and health. The sets varied in number and were by different publishers. There were teacher editions and a few workbooks for some of the sets. Also distributed to the teachers was a variety of resource materials giving ideas for content and activities that could be used in the classroom.
The CPC (Calunasan Sur Production Center) was given books of craft ideas for things people might be able to make in the barrio. The woodshop received books on making wood furniture.
Bibles and Bible storybooks were placed in the Sunday School room for use at the Calunasan Sur Fellowship. Pastor Along received books for inspiration, reference and study for his ministry among the people of the barrio.
A master list of the books in the library was typed. The lists were put in folders and given to the principal, each teacher and a copy was placed in the library. Because there was not enough time for this team to glue in envelopes and place index cards in each book for check out, it is planned that the library books will be checked out by the teachers using a check out sheet. Principal Evelyn will provide the check out sheets and she has assigned a teacher to monitor the check out system and the library.
It is our recommendation that another team should install the pocket and card system later so that students may eventually be able to check out books from the library rather than through their teacher. It would also make it easier for teachers to check the books out to their students. In the meantime, the staff is excited about teaching the students how to properly treat books and the use of the library books.
